Work is now substantially complete on the Llantwit Fardre Safe Routes in Communities scheme, which has delivered upgrades to pedestrian facilities at various locations at Crown Hill, Llantrisant Road and the Maesybryn estate.
The improvements have been carried out over several months and were recently completed, except for minor finishing works. The Council secured significant £454,800 funding from Welsh Government’s Safe Routes in Communities scheme in 2022/23, which has been complemented by £36,000 funding from the Council’s Highways and Transportation Capital Programme.
The scheme has installed a new zebra crossing on Crown Hill, located near the junction with Hillside Court (pictured, left), which has included alterations to an adjacent junction to improve safety. The crossing at Llantrisant Road near Hill Drive has also been upgraded to a puffin crossing, introducing a more efficient traffic light system and a widened pedestrian crossing area.
Additional works have also improved sections of footway at various locations, while several informal crossings have been installed and upgraded using tactile paving where necessary. Street lighting on a Public Right of Way between Llantrisant Road and Maesybryn Primary School is also improved.
Finally, traffic calming measures have been introduced along Crown Hill in preparation for Welsh Government’s default 20mph speed limit later this year.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “Thanks to significant funding from Welsh Government, the Council has delivered almost half-a-million pounds investment to create a safer environment for pedestrians in Llantwit Fardre. Work was targeted at several locations for the benefit of the community, including families walking to and from the local primary school.
“Key elements of the overall scheme include a new safe crossing point on Crown Hill, an upgrade to an existing pedestrian crossing at Llantrisant Road, and street lighting upgrades on a well-used footpath by families accessing the school. Footway improvements and informal crossing points have also been completed at various locations through the village. I’d like to thank residents for their cooperation as these upgrades were completed over recent weeks.
“This Safe Routes in Communities scheme is the latest to be completed in recent years, with the improvements following similar local schemes in Llwynypia, Abercynon, Llantrisant, Cilfynydd and Ton Pentre. Identifying and delivering Active Travel facilities continues to be a priority for the Council as we aim to encourage more people to walk and cycle as part of their daily routines – benefitting residents’ health and well-being, and the environment.”
