The community in Pontypridd is advised about the next traffic management as part of the Police Station and Berw Road Car Park demolition (7pm-2am, September 1-4). This takes place at night to significantly minimise disruption, with the pictured left turn onto Berw Road being temporarily brought out of use. All traffic management will be lifted during the day-time, between works.
The Council recently completed the arrangements for the permanent closure of Berw Road Car Park on July 30. It followed an announcement with South Wales Police that confirmed the next steps for policing in Pontypridd. The Berw Road police building has transferred to the Council, while a new, visible and accessible town centre police base will be established at Taff Street.
Meanwhile, the Council is developing and exploring a mixed-use development that will utilise both the former police station and car park sites. The possible options range from an improved public space, a modern replacement car park, better walking and cycling links, junction improvements at Bridge Street, and opportunities for new residential, commercial and cultural uses.
The demolition phase for both buildings started on August 3, to be undertaken by Council contractor Prichard’s until the early part of 2027. During the first six weeks on site, activities will include establishing a site compound, undertaking specialist surveys and removal work, internal pre- works, installing scaffolding, and then starting the building demolition. The demolition phase is being supported through Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns programme.
A lane closure at Morgan Street (near Pontypridd Bus Station) started on August 3 and will remain for the entire demolition phase. A footway closure around the police station and car park buildings will also remain in place.
Next phase of traffic management taking place at night
Prichard’s recently installed scaffolding to a section of the building using day-time traffic management (August 17-21) that included temporary signals at the Berw Road/Bridge Street junction, and a lane closure near the pharmacy on Berw Road. These works were successfully completed on schedule.
At the time, the Council gave notice that a second week of work is needed to install scaffolding to a different section of the building. The arrangements are now finalised, with the activity able to be carried out at night. It includes:
- A closure of the left-turn lane on Morgan Street, starting from a point near Y Muni, to the Berw Road/Bridge Street junction. As a result, there will be no left turn at this junction onto Berw Road – as shown on the following map. This takes place from 7pm-2am from Tuesday, September 1, to Friday, September 4. All traffic wishing to turn left will need to divert via Bridge Street Roundabout, approach the junction from the opposite direction, and take the right turn onto Berw Road. No temporary traffic lights are needed, while there will be no additional traffic management on Berw Road itself.
Please note, the left turn off the main road towards Pontypridd Bus Station and the Goods Yard will remain available. The arrangements will be in place for four nights, coming to an end by 2am on Saturday, September 5. Evening bus services will take the diversion, with journey times extended. White Bridge will also be open throughout after its recent repair scheme ended on August 14.
