All work to install a new pedestrian crossing point in Llanharan has been completed, and has now established a safer place for residents to cross the busy main road in the centre of the community.
Following requests from Elected Members and the community to improve pedestrian safety in the area, the Council has developed a scheme to install a permanent signalised crossing at a location near the Llanharan Community Shop. The work has progressed well in recent weeks, after the replacement of the nearby railway footbridge was completed at A473 Bridgend Road.
Work to install the crossing and repair some highway drainage infrastructure was completed in November – while carriageway resurfacing on the A473 between the bridge and the High Corner, and at the entrance into Chapel Road, was completed under a recent Sunday road closure (November 26).
Finishing work has since been completed and the contractor’s remaining site presence was recently removed following completion of the scheme.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “I’m pleased that the new pedestrian crossing in Llanharan, which was requested by the community, is now installed and fully-operational following good progress with installation works in recent weeks. It has formalised a safe crossing point at Bridgend Road, creating a safer pedestrian environment for local residents.
“Major work was recently completed to replace the nearby railway footbridge at Bridgend Road, and it was decided to follow directly on with the pedestrian crossing scheme to minimise the overall length of disruption – the alternative being returning to site at a future date. We have also taken the opportunity to carry out key drainage and resurfacing activity alongside the pedestrian crossing works, that could not be completed during the footbridge scheme.
“Thanks to the community for your cooperation during the railway footbridge replacement and the most-recent pedestrian crossing works – which have improved safety for residents at this busy location through the village.”
