Upcoming planned maintenance works at Wattstown National Tip

Improvements to the management of surface water drainage will commence at Wattstown National Tip in the coming days, as part the Council’s ongoing programme of maintenance at coal tips across the County Borough.

Subject to access arrangements, the pre-planned works will commence on Monday, January 9, 2023 and are not anticipated to cause disruption to residents or have the need for local traffic management systems.

Residents may have noticed increased activity on the Wattstown National Tip site over recent weeks as engineers from the Council; the Coal Authority; and the Council’s Consultants, Redstart, have been monitoring a localised shallow area of movement on site.

This will continue to be closely assessed and monitored as part of the robust inspection regime employed by the Council and will be supported by independent inspections undertaken by the Coal Authority, and the comprehensive monitoring arrangements already in place will be extended to provide important reassurance to local residents.

Temporary overland drainage has been installed and further works will also commence next week to improve drainage in this area.

Under this package of programmed maintenance, planned works will also be commencing at several tip locations across the County Borough in the coming weeks.

Pre-commencement work for Phase 4 of the remediation works at Tylorstown Tip are also already underway, with Prichard’s Contracting, the Council’s contractor for the scheme, undertaking activities such as survey work, installation of monitoring and establishing fencing prior to commencement in Spring this year.

This final phase of work will see:

  • Removal of around 195,000mof remaining material within the Llanwonno Upper Tip – including drainage and landscaping works.
  • Re-profiling the upper tip, with 35,000mof material used to ‘smooth out’ the landscape – including drainage and landscaping works.
  • Transportation of around 160,000m3 of material – along the disused tramway to be deposited at an identified receptor site, located just north of ‘Old Smokey’ which is contained within the wider Tylorstown Tip site.
  • Widening of the existing tramway to create a haulage route to the receptor site – to enable access for trucks and other plant machinery.
  • Re-profiling, drainage and landscaping of the receptor site.
