Important work to rectify damage to a large retaining wall next to the A4058 in Porth will get underway shortly. Residents and road users are assured that the main element of the work, which will require traffic management through a lane closure, will be completed at night to significantly reduce disruption.
The pictured retaining wall is positioned next to the A4058 Coedcae Road, between its junctions with Llwyncelyn Road and Brook Street. The large structure also supports Clifton Row, the residential street located above it.
A section of the wall has developed a significant bulge, indicating a lack of stability within the structure and the potential danger of its collapse – which is thought to have been brought about by an accumulation of issues.
The wall is currently propped by bulk bags, which have been in place to provide stability while the repair scheme was designed. This phase has been informed by ground investigations previously undertaken at the site location.
Work to stabilise the failing section of wall will start from Monday, August 18, subject to the Council securing relevant Section 61 consent for night working. Initial activity from August 18 will include establishing the site compound and receiving delivery of materials. The main works will then start from August 26.
Alun Griffiths (Contractors) Ltd are appointed to deliver the scheme, which will involve installing anchors through the retaining wall, before adding a facing to the front of the wall. The adjacent footway will be slightly reduced in width.
Due to the location of the retaining wall along the main A4058 route between Rhondda and Pontypridd, the contractor will restrict the main work within the scheme to night-time hours – between 7.30pm and 6am. These work shifts will come into effect from Tuesday, August 26.
During these hours, a single lane closure will be in operation, controlled by temporary traffic lights. Outside of the work hours, the traffic lights will be removed, ensuring there is no disruption during the day-time. Please note, some work might take place on Sundays during the day-time, depending upon progress, as the least-disruptive option to deliver the programme on time.
There will be no traffic management required at Clifton Row for any aspect of the work.
This scheme, which will be completed during early 2026, is funded via the Council’s Highways and Transportation Capital Programme for 2025/26 – within a £9.95 million allocation for various Structures schemes.
