Work to deliver the Cwmaman Flood Alleviation Scheme begins next week to strengthen the infrastructure at the Nant Aman Fach which will mitigate nearby properties from flooding – with minimal overall disruption expected throughout.
The Council has appointed Calibre Contracting Ltd to carry out the work, which will start from Monday, September 25. The scheme is designed to mitigate the risk of flooding for around 78 residential properties at Glanaman Road and Brynhyfryd – with the ordinary watercourse running adjacent to these two streets.
The scheme will maximise the capacity of the existing network – by improving a wall between the watercourse and the social club, and building a new wall between the watercourse and Glanaman Road/Brynhyfryd. The work will aim to direct overland flows of water to existing control structures, if the riverbank ever overtops in extreme rainfall. The works are scheduled for completion in early spring 2024.
The scheme, which also includes utility diversions, will require a road closure of the side lane between Glanaman Road and Brynhyfryd. A diversion route for motorists will be signposted, running along the length of these two roads.
The Council has secured significant funding from Welsh Government’s Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Capital Programme to deliver this scheme, benefitting from an 85% contribution towards the overall costs.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “These important works in Cwmaman will deliver more than half-a-million pounds of investment in flood alleviation measures designed to mitigate flood risk for the community, which is identified as a high-risk in an extreme weather event.
“We have welcomed significant Welsh Government support for this scheme, as part of a wider £4.8m package for flood alleviation work across Rhondda Cynon Taf in 2023/24. This support from the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management and Small Scale Works Grant programmes is separate to our own Capital Programme investment. Both of these funding avenues enable us to continue our programme of more than 100 flood alleviation schemes.
“We continue to make positive progress towards delivering our large-scale schemes protecting at-risk communities. While work starts in Cwmaman on Monday, the Council is also beginning an extensive public consultation for the future Treorchy Flood Alleviation Scheme – following a similar process for the Pentre Flood Alleviation Scheme that was carried out over the summer. Important culvert improvement work is also starting at Park Street in Tylorstown on September 25, ahead of a wider future scheme for that area.

The required road closure to the side lane between Glanaman Road and Brynhyfryd is needed due to its close proximity to the work site – but the majority of activity will be within the area of the watercourse.
