The Council is currently progressing plans to redevelop the derelict land on Hannah Street Porth (opposite the Bingo Hall) with a proposal for the space to be turned into a much-needed short-stay car park and landscaped seating area.
The site located at 37 Hannah St. covers an area of land left vacant when a fire destroyed the end of a terrace property a number of years ago.
An opportunity emerged for RCT to utilise this derelict space and explore the development of much-needed parking for the town centre.
In 2022, the Council purchased the land with the assistance of Welsh Government Transforming Towns funding. Since then, work has been carried out by the Council to produce a redevelopment proposal for the area.
The preferred layout option utilises the existing boundary to create 4 new parking bays, additional grass verges, landscape areas and seating for the benefit of local residents, shoppers, and visitors.
The 4 additional spaces will be subject to the same parking restrictions currently in place at Hannah Street Car Park.
The extension of the car park is subject to a 21-day legal consultation before work can progress, which will begin on Monday 15th July 2024. Construction of the site is anticipated to commence in late 2024.
Councillor Andrew Morgan MBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, with responsibility for Highways, said:
"It is once again pleasing to see Rhondda Cynon Taf Council demonstrating its proactive approach in targeting investment proposals to improve parking access to our much-loved town centres.
“Utilising grant funding from the Welsh Government, this project will transform the currently vacant land and provide invaluable additional parking spaces with greenspace and seating for residents and visitors to the town.
“I look forward to seeing this project progress to improve the well-loved Porth town centre”.
