Important culvert repair works completed in Mountain Ash

The Council would like to thank the local community in Mountain Ash for their cooperation while major culvert repairs were undertaken at Troed y Rhiw Road – which have now been successfully completed.

These important works started in May 2025, and were the second phase of a scheme to rectify culvert damage caused by the unprecedented weather during Storm Bert, and to improve the network’s resilience.

Urgent repairs were initially undertaken in the days following the storm, and the first phase of the main repair scheme then took place between February and April 2025.

Phase two, which was substantially completed on Friday, August 8, has upsized a section of pipe beneath the road, installed an overflow system to complement it, and installed a new manhole along the network. Residents may notice some minor finishing works being undertaken over the next week.

The scheme was delivered by the RCT Streetcare Team,  alongside Council sub-contractor Arch Services Ltd.

All traffic management has now been removed following the completion of the works, including lifting the temporary closure at the lower section of Troed y Rhiw Road.

The dedicated right turn lane in the centre of the A4059 has now been brought back into use, following its temporary closure.

The Council has secured £4.52 million from Welsh Government for flood alleviation in 2025/26 – across its Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management and Small Scale Works Grant programmes.

This is in addition to £1.5 million funding towards 10 further schemes via the Resilient Roads Fund, for the current financial year.
