Updated: January repairs in Abercynon to rectify storm damage to a wall

River Row

Please note, these works have been pushed back a week due to the weather, and will now start on January 12. The original news item below has been updated with this detail. Thanks

The Council is giving advanced notice of upcoming work at River Row in Abercynon, which will start early in the New Year to rectify damage to a wall.

The pictured structure has sustained storm damage over the past year, and the repair scheme will focus on a 5-metre section that is failing.

The Council has appointed Edwards Diving Services as the contractor to deliver the scheme, starting from the week commencing Monday, January 12 (2026). Please note it is possible that the works could be pushed back again if required, if the cold weather that is forecast impacts upon progress.

The works will underpin the scour damage at the base of the wall with concrete, to enable a stable foundation for the masonry wall to be rebuilt.

Due to the narrow nature of the highway at River Row, it will not be possible to maintain access for vehicles during the work, which is expected to last around three weeks.

River Row will therefore be closed during work hours (8am-5pm) – from its junction with Ynysmeurig Bridge, northwards for around 115 metres.

The Council has been in dialogue with local residents, putting in provisions to accommodate their requirements where possible.

Please note that waste/recycling collections will be accommodated by the contractor and are therefore unaffected.

During the closure hours, the pedestrian access at River Row will be maintained – but access cannot be maintained for emergency service vehicles.

River Row will open outside of the work hours (before 8am and after 5pm each day).

The works are being funded by capital funding set aside for storm repairs.

Thanks to the community in advance for your cooperation, as these essential repairs are delivered.
