Porth’s Bronwydd Pool and Gym is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its official opening – come and join the big birthday bash!

From 11am – 12pm and 12pm – 1pm on Sunday, March 23, the centre’s swimming pool will be free of charge for everyone to use. It’s a chance for people to celebrate the centre’s milestone.

Floats and toys will be out for the children. All  you need to do is ring or email the centre to book in - make sure you state how many adults and children and make sure you follow the adult to child pool ratio.

Keep an eye out for the Bronwydd's Big Birthday celebration passes being delivered locally, offering those who are not currently a member of the centre the chance to enjoy a free swim or gym session, so they can see what they are missing out on!

Don’t worry if you miss the weekend fun, the celebrations are sure to continue throughout the year, so make sure you follow Bronwydd Pool on Facebook and Instagram for the latest news and offers.

Cllr Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Leisure, said: “Happy Birthday to Bronwydd Pool and Gym! Plus, a massive thank you to all its wonderful customers over the years who have helped to make it such a success.

“These celebrations will once again showcase what a special place the centre is. Tucked away in a residential area, with the stunning park on its doorstep, it really is a great place to train and swim.

“The fact that it has gone from strength to strength since it’s official opening in 1985 is testament to that.

“We welcome new members of all ages and we hope you take advantage of the Big Birthday Bash passes to come along and try Bronwydd for yourself.”

It was on March 24, 1985 the new Bronwydd pool and gym was opened to the public after a two-year construction project, a very different attraction from the former open-air Porth Pool.

For decades, the outdoor pool was a place of fun, training and competitions and it is well-remembered to this day by residents.

To secure leisure facilities for the future generations, a huge construction project began to create an indoor pool and gym, which has been renovated and developed over time to become the current-day Bronwydd pool and gym.

It’s now a vibrant, modern centre offering a full pool timetable, including 6am early morning swims, aqua aerobics, a free family swim on weekends and swimming lessons, as well as a well-equipped gym.

Nestled in the heart of Caemawr, with views across the town, the centre sits at one of the entrances to beautiful Bronwydd Park, which was gifted to the people of the town by the owner of the then Thomas and Evans Factory in Jenkins Street.

The factory is better known as the Pop Factory, for it is the place the famous fizzy drinks in glass bottles were made and distributed far and wide – what a treat they were!
