Delivering highway drainage improvements at key location in Tonyrefail

Gilfach Road, Tonyrefail - grid

The Council will undertake important Resilient Roads work along a section of B4278 Gilfach Road in Tonyrefail from next week, to alleviate the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rainfall.

The Welsh Government-funded investment will deliver a series of highway drainage improvements from Monday, June 2, requiring a single lane road closure and temporary traffic lights.

The works location is to the western part of Gilfach Road, on the section of road generally between the A4093 roundabout and Trane Cemetery.

The work will install a new carrier pipe over around 200-metres of the carriageway, along with eight new gullies that have large capacity gully covers.

A new headwall will also be installed to convey rainwater into a nearby watercourse, positioned to the east of Nant-Y-Fron housing estate.

In addition to the temporary traffic lights, certain sections of the footway will need to be closed – but a suitable diversionary route for pedestrians will be maintained where possible. Access to all premises will remain unaffected.

The RCT Streetcare Team will deliver the works, which are anticipated to last around 10 weeks in total.

These works are funded by Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads Fund – from which the Council has secured £1.5 million towards 10 further schemes for the current financial year (2025/26).

This is on top of the £4.52 million secured from Welsh Government for flood alleviation work in 2025/26, across its Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management and Small Scale Works Grant programmes.

Thanks to residents and road users in advance for your cooperation during the upcoming works at Gilfach Road, which will increase flood resilience at this key location on the road network.
