Bonfire Night: Be a Firework Hero When Thinking of Others this November 5

ENG Veterans Bonfire Night

As we prepare to mark Bonfire Night with colourful displays and celebrations, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is encouraging residents to be mindful of others and enjoy the festivities responsibility and with compassion.

Remember, Remember, the Fifth of November, and keep our veterans in mind

While fireworks may be a source of joy for many, for others – including our local veterans living with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) – the loud, unpredictable noises and flashing lights can trigger distressing memories of combat and trauma. Feelings of anxiety, fear, and even panic attacks are not uncommon.

According to Help the Heroes, a 2023 YouGov poll found that:

  • 74% of veterans support tighter restrictions on when fireworks can be set off.
  • 67% support a reduction in the overall number of days that fireworks can be sold to the public.
  • 23% said fireworks have triggered a negative experience for them personally, ranging from feeling jumpy and hypervigilant through to experiencing a full panic attack.

Introducing the Firework Heroes Code

To help make Bonfire Night safer and more inclusive, residents are encouraged to follow the Firework Heroes Code:

  • Be mindful – consider how fireworks may affect people nearby.
  • Choose planned public displays – attend organised events, rather than setting off fireworks at home.
  • Give advance warning – let neighbours know if you are planning to set off fireworks. A quick message on a local WhatsApp or Facebook group can help others prepare and create a coping strategy.
  • Go silent - consider using new low-noise fireworks or laser shows.
  • Offer support - if you think someone has been affected by fireworks, help them feel as safe and comfortable as possible and encourage them to seek professional help.

Councillor Maureen Webber BEM, Deputy Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Armed Forces Champion, said: “Bonfire Night is a time for celebration, but it’s also a chance to show kindness and consideration to those around us – especially our veterans and those with PTSD who find this time of the year challenging.

“By following the Firework Heroes Code, we can all play a part in making November 5 safer, more inclusive, and more respectful for everyone.

“Together, we can enjoy the festivities while being mindful of those who’ve served our country.”
