Improving the culvert network at key location in Cilfynydd

Ely Brook

The Council will undertake a works scheme in Cilfynydd to deliver culvert inlet improvements, requiring some traffic management along a short section of the A4054.

Welsh Government funding has been secured to deliver the scheme in the week commencing Monday, November 17, at a point where Merthyr Road meets Pontshonnorton Road.

The works will be targeted around the Ely Brook watercourse, to improve the network’s efficiency during periods of heavy rainfall.

The scheme will remove the existing culvert headwall and install a new headwall and grille. It will also install an access track to improve accessibility and ensure the area can be more easily maintained in the future. Finally, the works will remove an existing utility column.

The Council has appointed Peter Simmons Construction as the contractor to deliver the scheme – which will last around nine weeks in total.

To facilitate the works, the contractor requires a single lane closure on the A4054 that will be managed using temporary traffic lights. Some footways may also need to be temporarily brought out of use, but a suitable pedestrian diversion will be maintained at all times.

This scheme represents an investment of more than a quarter-of-a-million pounds for the community – via Welsh Government’s Small Scale Works Grant and Council match funding.

Overall, around £6 million has been secured from Welsh Government for flood alleviation in 2025/26 – across the Small Scale Works Grant, the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Programme, and the Resilient Roads Fund.

Thanks to the community in advance for your cooperation as these works in Cilfynydd are completed.
