New look gym and spin studio for Abercynon Sports Centre

A new-look gym and spin room will be created at Abercynon Sports Centre, thanks to a significant £350,000 investment.

The current gym will be remodelled and extended, with all new equipment being installed for the benefit of customers – existing and new.

The spin studio will be moved from its current space in the gym – making more room for the new kit – and a bespoke studio with modern lighting and even more bikes will be created in another area of the centre.

Abercynon is the latest Leisure for Life centre to benefit from ongoing investment from Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, as part of its Transforming RCT capital investment commitment.

Work is set to begin in Abercynon on November 14, when the current gym is closed and all equipment is moved to the sports hall so customers can continue to train as usual.

The new kit begins arriving the following day and the process begins to get it installed and ready for use. Meanwhile, work will start on the fitness studio behind reception, transforming it into a bespoke spin studio with modern lighting and 25 bikes.

The new facilities are set to open in January 2026 and will further add to the offer of Abercynon Sports Centre, which offers customers gym, swimming, swimming lessons for all ages, fitness classes and indoor sports such as badminton and squash.

Cllr Scott Emanuel, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Leisure, said: “This is exciting news for the popular Abercynon Sports Centre. It has a great customer base with people from all ages enjoying the gym, as well as swimming and fitness classes.

“We know the staff make it a great place to be, with support, encouragement and the odd challenge thrown in here to put customers through their paces. So a remodelled, larger gym with new kit is going to add to that success story.

“Spin is already a popular class at Abercynon and customers can now enjoy a bespoke studio with lighting, new bikes and additional capacity in classes.

“Leisure is a key focus of the Transforming RCT Investment commitment as we recognise how important it is for residents to have access to high quality leisure and fitness facilities.

“We have 12 Leisure for Life facilities in Rhondda Cynon Taf, all accessible via one easy membership offering gym, swimming, fitness classes, indoor sports and health suites across all so people can access the leisure they love easily.

“We have also invested in sports facilities such as 3Gs and mugas, offering an all-weather, multi-sports place for people to enjoy – and there is now one within three miles of every home.

“Plus digital improvements to help customers access their leisure membership and bookings and news and information right across the Leisure for Life service – it’s a great time to be involved!”
