Scheme to reduce flood risk on key road in Tonyrefail completed

Gilfach Road, Tonyrefail grid

Works have now been completed to deliver a Resilient Roads investment at B4278 Gilfach Road in Tonyrefail, which is designed to reduce the risk of flooding during heavy rain.

The scheme started at the beginning of June 2025 and was completed in the week commencing September 1. Please note, some temporary surfacing has been used as additional resurfacing work is planned in the weeks ahead, to improve the road surface at this location.

The Council benefitted from Welsh Government funding for the main scheme, located generally between the A4093 roundabout and Trane Cemetery.

It has installed a new carrier pipe over around 200-metres of the road, while 16 new gullies with large capacity gully covers are also delivered. The new drainage system outfalls into an existing culvert running under the road near the cemetery.

Following the completion of the works last week, the RCT Streetcare Team removed all temporary traffic lights and lifted the local footway closures.

This scheme in Tonyrefail is one of 10 benefitting from a £1.5 million investment via the Resilient Roads Fund this financial year (2025/26), having been secured by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.

This is on top of the £4.52 million secured from Welsh Government for flood alleviation work, across its Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management and Small Scale Works Grant programmes, this year.

Thanks to residents and road users for your cooperation during the Gilfach Road scheme, which has reduced the risk of flooding ahead of the autumn and winter seasons.
