Abercynon Sports Centre’s new-look gym and spin studio have been officially re-opened, marking the completion of a £300,000 Transforming RCT investment scheme at the popular facility.

Cllr Scott Emmanuel, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure for Life, visited the facility to see for himself the incredible new-look gym and spin studio.

In a matter of just weeks, thanks to the commitment of Abercynon Sports Centre staff and contractor partners, the old gym has been transformed into a bright, modern space with all-new fitness equipment based on what customers have said they wanted to see.

This includes the latest models of favourites such as cross trainers, treadmills, bikes and rowers, plus a new Smith machine and larger free weights area. There is an increased range of resistance machines and synrgy has been given a new look.

Meanwhile an old fitness studio has become a spin studio, complete with immersive lighting and modern graphics plus 25 new, top of the range bikes. The spin timetable has also been extended so even more people can enjoy even more classes.

Importantly, all of the works were carried out in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Equalities Team and Disabled Staff Network to ensure the gym reflected the needs of a range of customers, including a new lift for wheelchair users, accessible water fountain and kit that can be adapted.

The new gym and spin studio was previewed to customers during a red carpet reception  and has now been officially visited and opened by Cllr Scott Emmanuel, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Leisure for Life.

He said: “What an offer there is at Abercynon Sports Centre! The new-look gym is huge, with a vibrant design and a brilliant range of the very latest equipment for customers to enjoy – no matter what their wellbeing goals are or how they approach their training.

“It’s great to hear that the kit in the gym was chosen based on customer feedback.  People had a say on what current equipment they wanted upgraded – or more machines added to cope with demand – and what new equipment they would like to see.

“This busy, vibrant gym has a massive range of equipment, all of it brand new and the latest model and is enjoyed by people of all ages, interests and abilities.

“It was reassuring to see the close, supportive relationship staff have with their customers. Staff are friendly and extremely knowledgeable and committed to ensuring everyone, gets the best out of their workout.

“If you have never visited a gym before, they are on hand to show you around, show you how everything works and, importantly, help you find a routine that works for your goals.

“Plus the new spin room is already extremely popular, with new bikes, more bikes and an extended timetable.

“Combined with the existing fitness class timetable, indoor sports and swimming for all ages, there really is something for everyone at Abercynon Sports Centre. Pop in, meet the staff and see the facilities. Your first gym session is free!”
