Counselling for carers

This is a free confidential telephone or face to face counselling service provided by a qualified counsellor, available to local carers in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

Carers can be parents, sons or daughters, partners, relatives, friends or neighbours of all ages who take responsibility for the care of someone who is finding it difficult to manage or cope at home without help.

There is no standard picture of a carer.  Caring can be a short or long-term activity lasting from a few weeks to decades.  The help carers provide is essential and can vary from weekly shopping to care 24 hours a day.  The tasks carers undertake can include housework, personal care as well as providing company and emotional support.  Caring is often very hard work and stressful.

Carers often make major sacrifices to look after the person they care for; caring can have consequences for their career, finances, social life, personal time, freedom and health.

The counsellor is a trained listener who can help you to look at options, consider issues in a different way and make decisions about how to manage your life in a way that works for you. The aim is to help you find your own solutions to your problems and concerns, respecting you and your right to self-determination.

As long as you are a carer in Rhondda Cynon Taf, you can make an appointment with the counsellor.

In the first session the counsellor will explain what to expect from the sessions and at the end you can decide if it is right for you. If not the counsellor may suggest alternative organisations that might be of help.

To arrange an appointment simply telephone the Carers Support Project or you can email the Counselling service directly to set-up an appointment
