Name: Kieran
Joined Graduate Programme: September 2023
Graduate Role: Data Acquisition & Storage Infrastructure Officer
Degree: Computer Science
After completing my degree in Computer Science, I applied to the council’s Graduate Programme in 2023. Over the two‑year placement, I worked as a Graduate Officer in Data Acquisition & Storage Infrastructure, contributing to critical data quality and engineering projects while also completing the Project Management Diploma through ALS.
The graduate scheme offered the opportunity to learn while working, allowing me to gain external qualifications that strengthened my CV and portfolio. I also had the chance to shadow previous graduates, helping me develop the technical, analytical, and organisational skills needed for the role, all in preparation for progressing into a permanent position within the Data Team.
Working for the council has been a fantastic experience. The work is meaningful and has real influence, and the organisation offers excellent benefits, including flexible working hours, employee perks and discounts, a generous annual leave scheme, and competitive pay, particularly valuable for those entering employment for the first time.’
What advice would you give to anyone considering applying for the Graduate Programme?
Be proactive in your learning – it’s the best opportunity to develop new skills while you work.
Never fear failure – it’s one of the best teachers.
Seize the opportunity – go for it while you have the chance and give your best.
