The Queen’s Baton Relay is a tradition of the Commonwealth Games. It symbolises the coming together of all Commonwealth nations and territories in preparation for the Games. This summer the Commonwealth Games will be held in Birmingham, and we are very excited to cheer on Team Wales.
On its five-day journey around Wales the baton will spend an hour with us in Clydach Vale. Rhondda Cynon Taf is very proud and privileged to welcome the Queen’s Baton Relay and we would like you to be there.
To celebrate its visit we, in partnership with Welsh Athletics and Rhondda Athletic Club, will be delivering junior athletics activities at the track, for 4-12 year olds. The activities will be running between 4.00pm and 5.30pm. The session is free. You can book online here

15 individuals have been selected to carry the baton during its relay around King George V Athletics Track.
Seven Bronze Young Ambassadors:

Bronze Young Ambassadors work within their primary school to develop new sporting opportunities and promote physical activity to their peers. They are role models and inspire other children to get involved. All seven of these BYA’s have delivered fantastic projects and shown great leadership skills.
Two Silver Young Ambassadors:

Silver Young Ambassadors work within their secondary school and wider community to increase participation in sport by inspiring others to be physically active. They work with us and school staff to develop projects. All our SYA’s have worked hard this year to develop new opportunities and promote sport to their peers.
Ffion Lightfoot, Gold Young Ambassador from St John Baptist CIW High
Gold Young Ambassadors work within their secondary school and wider community to increase participation opportunities and inspire others to be physically active. They support the training of Bronze and Silver YA’s and represent RCT nationally. Ffion and the other GYA’s have done incredible work in their communities and have supported our team to deliver the Young Ambassador programme.
Four Rhondda Athletics Club Volunteers:

These four volunteers are the life and soul of Rhondda Athletics Club. They are extremely dedicated, volunteering their time week in week out to keep the club running. There would be no club without them! Their impact on athletics in RCT has been huge, with the club producing many quality athletes but also providing grass roots opportunities for children and adults of all ages and abilities.
Rhys Jones, para-athlete
Rhys is a para-athlete that competes in category T37 sprinting events. He represented Great Britain at the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Rhys has represented Wales at two Commonwealth Games. He was a bronze medallist at the Glasgow 2014 Games. Rhys is a local boy who started his athletics journey in Clydach Vale, with Rhondda Athletics Club. He will represent Wales once more at a Commonwealth Games when he travels to Birmingham this summer.
