Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda

The Welsh Medium secondary school in Cymer will receive a brand-new, fully accessible 11-19 Welsh Medium school on its current site, replacing the existing buildings and creating first-class facilities.

Cwm RhonddaThe new development will cater for 900 pupils, including 150 sixth form pupils. It will be delivered with Welsh Government via its Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme, in a joint investment worth £77.5 million. Kier Construction is the appointed contractor.

A public exhibition event was held at the school in January 2026 where the community could go along, view the plans, ask questions and have their say. This was part of a wider Pre Application consultation held during winter 2025/26.

As well as the brand new school (shown in the artist’s impression video above), the plans include new outdoor areas and improved sports facilities that will be available for both school and community use. Planning permission was granted by the Planning and Development Committee on March 19, 2026.
