Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun

Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun in Penywaun will benefit from a £12.1m investment to expand the school’s capacity and provide significant new facilities for staff, pupils and the community.

As part of Welsh Government’s Sustainable Communities for Learning Programme (formerly the 21st Century Schools and Colleges Programme), the £12.1m investment will increase Welsh Medium places provided at the school by a total of 187 (from 1,038 to 1,225). The Council will receive a 65% contribution from the Welsh Government in order to deliver the brand new facilities.

Work is officially underway to deliver new £12.1m school and community facilities at Ysgol Gyfun Rhydywaun (July 2021)

The overall scheme will provide significant teaching and sports facilities within the grounds of the existing school. It will include:

  • Demolition of the current caretaker’s house and removal of the school’s temporary classrooms.
  • Construction of a new eight-classroom block which will include community rooms, along with school drama and music facilities.
  • Provision of a new school reception, sports hall, fitness suite and changing rooms, along with a new 45-space parking area with a cycle store.

The wider community will also be able to access some of these facilities, with segregation from pupils attending the school ensured.

The development will complement a new ‘all-weather’ 3G sports pitch which was delivered for school and community use by the Council in April 2019.

Full planning permission was granted for the development in February 2021, and is on course to be delivered during 2022.
