Funding Secured for Further Flood Schemes in Pentre

Three further flood alleviation schemes have been announced for the Pentre area, after the Council secured funding from the Welsh Government to progress works at three locations.  This follows an initial investment of almost £950,000 to date in response to Storm Dennis for the community of Pentre.

The Council has recently secured almost £200,000 of funding, consisting of an allocation from the Welsh Government’s Resilient Roads Fund to improve the capacity of the highway drainage in the vicinity of Pentre Road, and a further funding Allocation obtained from the Welsh Government’s Small Schemes Flood Risk Management Fund for continued improvements in the vicinity of Pleasant Street, which follows on from the very successful introduction of an enlarged debris catcher at the entrance to the park.

The final aspect of the funding will see design and development work undertaken for a scheme in Volunteer Street. Although in the early stages of development, it is envisaged that these schemes will commence in early Summer 2021.

Extensive work is continuing on the design and development of the multi-million pound flood alleviation scheme to reduce the risk of flooding in Pentre.

Residents have recently seen some activity in gathering data through survey of the drainage network and ground levels.  This will continue over the next few months as a complex computer simulation model is created so that a sustainable solution to the high risk of flooding can be determined.

As the major project develops, the Council will continue with its ongoing programme to make improvements to the drainage system. Notably, works to install a manhole and repair a section of culvert is nearing completion in Margret street.

Work also continues on the major upgrade of Nant-Y-Pentre Inlet and the scheme is due for completion in May 2021.  In addition, studies have been completed on the Volunteer Street pumping station, and work will be carried out to increase its efficiency and resilience within the next few months.
