Three consecutive Sunday road closures are required in Pontypridd Town Centre to ensure the ongoing demolition of the former Bingo Hall can progress safely – with the first closure taking place this weekend (June 13).
Contractor Walters began the demolition process for the former Bingo Hall and Angharad’s Nightclub buildings in March, to enable the Council’s future redevelopment of the prominent town centre site after years of being derelict – much in the same way Llys Cadwyn has transformed the former Taff Vale site.
Residents and town centre visitors will have noticed the good progress made, particularly in recent weeks, as parts of the old buildings were demolished. Walters has recently taken delivery of a high-reach demolition machine to the works site and, in order to proceed safely in the town centre, all-day Sunday road closures are required from 7.30am on June 13, June 20 and June 27.
Pontypridd Town Centre businesses will remain OPEN for business as usual at all times, and all accesses for pedestrians will be maintained.
The road closures include Taff Street (from its northern junction with Market Street to High Street), Mill Street (between numbers 1 and 11a), High Street (the entire length) and Market Street (between Church Street and its southern junction with Taff Street). An alternative route for motorists will be signposted via Crossbrook Street, Gelliwastad Road, Catherine Street and Sardis Road.
Vehicular access within the town centre will only be allowed as far as the northern junction of Taff Street and Market Street. Motorists will then be able to proceed via Market Street and Church Street, but will not be able to continue on Taff Street. Access for emergency services will be maintained. Buses are unaffected as no Sunday services travel through the town centre.
Work to demolish the buildings to street level is on course to be completed by late summer 2021. The Council initially received Welsh Government funding to contribute to its acquisition of the site, and has now received further support from its Transforming Towns initiative to complete the demolition process.
