Council announces 14th 3G pitch facility

There are currently 13 3G sports pitches in Rhondda Cynon Taf - and a new facility will be built in Treherbert

The Council has announced plans for a further 3G facility to be constructed in the northern Rhondda Fawr area, sited at the Baglan Field in Penyrenglyn, Treherbert.

Once completed, it will mean that Rhondda Cynon Taf will be home to 14 3G facilities spread across the County Borough, and crucially means that the ambition to ensure that residents have access to such a facility within a 3-mile radius of wherever they live will be achieved.

The facility will be situated adjacent to Penyrenglyn Primary School and will provide a full-size 3G football pitch, as well as three 5-a-side pitches.  The full-sized pitch will be graded to Tier 3, meaning South Wales Alliance League, Cymru South League and Adran League football can be played there; whilst it will also come with a rugby shock pad, meaning that teams can also train at the facility.  In addition to the community use, the facility will also serve Penyrenglyn Primary School as their school playing pitches.

The feasibility and design work has been completed, and the Council has a consultant in place to deliver the scheme. The next stage of the project will see it go out to tender and the commencement of physical work on-site will be dependent on contractor availability.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, said: “I am pleased to announce the plans for the Council to deliver it’s 14th 3G pitch in Rhondda Cynon Taf.

“Developing this facility at the Baglan Field in Treherbert will see the administration’s commitment to giving residents access to a 3G facility within a 3-mile radius of wherever they live in Rhondda Cynon Taf delivered upon.

“This will be a flagship project that will provide not only three 5-a-side pitches, but also a Tier 3 full-size football surface that means that fixtures from the Alliance League and above can be hosted there.

“I recently met with senior representatives from the Football Association of Wales and had some positive discussions regarding the future strategic visions for grassroots football in Wales, and I am pleased that this administration is delivering on our commitment to providing state-of-the-art outdoor sports facilities to encourage residents to get involved with sports locally.”
