The Council’s Armed Forces Veterans Service supports hundreds of veterans and their families all year around. Among those it helps is Darryl Lewis, of Rhondda, a member of the Valley Veterans group.
Darryl Lewis, who served for three years as a craftsman with The Corps of the Royal Electrical Mechanical Engineers (REME), is grateful to the Armed Forces Veterans Service for the support he received.
Darryl Lewis said: “The Valley Veterans is a self-caring group, which helps each other – but we all need help at some time in our lives. We are grateful to the Council’s Armed Forces Veterans Service for its support and assistance whenever it is needed.
“Among other things, the Service helped me obtain a bus pass – little things like that which make a huge difference to someone’s life and independence. The Council’s Armed Forces Veterans Service is a vital link for us.”
Mr Lewis served with REME during his time in active service, providing engineering support to the Army, maintaining and repairing its equipment, both during wartime and peacetime.
REME, the Army’s Corps of professional Engineers, can be found wherever the Army is located, at home or overseas. It provides training and qualifications, as well are great career opportunities.
Councillor Maureen Webber, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Deputy Leader and Armed Forces Champion, said: “We owe so much to our armed forces community, to our veterans, to their families – past and present. We are there to help them in their times of need
“Our officers within the Council’s Armed Forces Veterans Service have a wealth of information that could help make life a little easier for those who have served their country. Support is also available for families of our veterans, who often share the burden of the time served in warzones with their loved ones.”

Representatives from the Council’s Armed Forces Veterans Service regularly attend Breakfast Clubs and meetings held across Rhondda Cynon Taf, providing emotional and practical support if needed. They offer a wide range of information and assistance on subjects such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Housing, Adult Social Care, Benefits, Finances and Employment.
