The Council is supporting Black History Month by hosting a virtual event for Council staff, officers and elected members this week on the theme of ‘Black History in Wales and Beyond.’
Presented by local historian and university lecturer Darren Macey, he will be discussing historical figures through the years and their impact on society.
Mr Macey, a lecturer at the University of South Wales who specialises in civil rights, will be giving an in-depth historical look at black histories in Wales and their significance in modern day Wales.
The virtual event will be officially opened by Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Council Business, with responsibility for Equality and Diversity.
Black History Month takes place each October in the UK, recognising, remembering and celebrating the contributions of black individuals, groups and organisations.
Councillor Maureen Webber, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Council Business, with responsibility for Equality and Diversity, said:
“We are proud to be a County Borough rich in diversity, and I am delighted that black histories are being celebrated, not only throughout the month of October, but all year around.
“The Council’s Diversity and Inclusion team is leading the way as the local authority continues and cements its commitment to educating ourselves and others.”
The Council is hosting a virtual event to celebrate Black History Month on Wednesday, October 20.
