Gelligaled Park footbridge in Ystrad will close in the daytime for two weeks, due to unforeseen damage found in ongoing works. It will remain open in the early mornings, late afternoons and evenings.
The bridge off Pontrhondda Avenue has remained open while undergoing a second phase of repairs, which got underway in May.
However, heavy corrosion has been discovered to the bridge’s vertical stiffeners, and this must be rectified under a closure to ensure safety.
Therefore, starting from Monday, July 3, the bridge will be closed between 9.30am and 3pm each day. This arrangement will be in place for two weeks.
An alternative route for pedestrians and cyclists will be signposted via A4058 Tyntyla Road.
The next major phase of work on site will be repainting the structure – the bridge will remain open for this activity.
The overall scheme will complete masonry, concrete and scour repairs, along with parapet replacement and street lighting improvements.
Resurfacing of the bridge will be the final works activity, requiring a scheduled short closure.
The scheme is included within a large programme of Storm Dennis repairs in 2023/24, which is benefitting from major Welsh Government funding.
Thanks to the community in Ystrad for your continued patience and cooperation.
