Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is pleased to share an update on the ongoing War Memorials Digitisation Project, with five newly digitised memorials now live on the RCT Our Heritage website – bringing the total to six.

The following memorials are now available to view online:

Launched in November 2023 as part of a £200,000 programme of investment, the Council’s Heritage Memorials and Historic Monuments Officer has been leading this three-year project. This landmark initiative – the first of its kind in the UK – is dedicated to preserving the stories of the brave men and women from our County Borough who sadly lost their lives in conflict, including those who served.

The project goes beyond simply listing names. Each commemorated individual is provided with a baseline level of information, accessible via QR codes placed at each memorial. These codes link to the RCT Our Heritage website, where visitors can explore the personal stories behind the names – helping to preserve their stories for future generations.

The recent progress reflects the dedication of our volunteers, who have played a vital role in researching the lives of thousands of individuals listed across RCT’s war memorials.

To date, over 200 volunteers have contributed to the project, gathering key information such as birth death dates, rank, service number, war grave location, last known address, and any other known personal details – including family connections and links to the Women’s Peace Petition. Photographs, documents, and newspaper have been key in bringing these stories to life.

Councillor Maureen Webber BEM, Deputy Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Armed Forces Champion, said: “I am incredibly proud of the progress being made on our War Memorial Digitisation Project. This initiative is more than just a record of names – it’s about honouring the lives behind them and ensuring their stories are preserved for generations to come.

“Thanks to the dedication of our volunteers and the work of our Heritage Service, we are building a lasting tribute to the men and women of Rhondda Cynon Taf who made the ultimate sacrifice. By bringing these memorials to life online, we are helping our communities connect with the local history in a meaningful and accessible way.”

The Council is honoured to continue developing this project and is actively seeking new volunteers to help with research. No experience is necessary as full training is provided. Whether you can spare a few hours or a few days, every contribution makes a difference in helping us tell the stories of the brave men and women of Rhondda Cynon Taf who lost their lives in conflict.
