Treorchy Library Strikes a New Chord with Community Pianos

Piano Treorchy canva

Treorchy Library is delighted to have welcomed two new community digital pianos, opening up fresh opportunities for creativity, learning and people coming together through music.

The pianos arrived in March 2026 thanks to the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, as part of a national programme designed to make music more accessible in public spaces. They’re now free for visitors to enjoy, helping to make music more accessible to people of all ages and abilities across Rhondda Cynon Taf.

This exciting addition reflects the library service’s ongoing commitment to supporting creativity, wellbeing and lifelong learning, and strengthens Treorchy Library’s role at the heart of the community. The idea grew from local feedback and builds on the popularity of the digital piano already in use at Pontypridd Library.

With around 1,500 visitors each week, Treorchy Library is the perfect home for the pianos. One has been placed in the gallery area for relaxed, drop‑in playing, while the second can be found in the new Artists’ CoLab space, encouraging collaboration and creative exploration.

Working alongside local partners including Park & Dare Theatre, the RCT Music Service, schools and community groups, the library will be hosting a varied programme of workshops, performances and family‑friendly activities, giving everyone the chance to get involved and bring the pianos to life!

The project ties in with this year’s Summer Reading Challenge; a free holiday activity for children aged 4-11 to discover the links between music and literacy in fun and engaging ways. The challenge aims to improve children's reading skills and confidence while they collect free rewards for their reading. Every library in RCT will have a starter pack and children can join by visiting any library in RCT.

This highlights what our libraries are all about, welcoming, inclusive spaces where people can connect, learn new skills and express themselves creatively, there is so much on offer, come and find out more!

Councillor Scott Emanuel, Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure & Tourism, said:“These new pianos provide another opportunity for the community to explore their creativity. Our libraries offer a wide range of activities, history, knowledge and community groups, and this is a great example of how they continue to evolve to meet the interests of local people. It’s fantastic to see Treorchy Library building on its already strong community spirit, giving residents and visitors alike the chance to try something new, develop their skills, or to simply enjoy the music! We’re really pleased to support opportunities like this that help bring people together in such a positive and welcoming space.”
