You should never put batteries in your black or clear recycling bags as they can damage the environment and cause fires during processing.
Household batteries
Common household batteries include:
- AA and AAA batteries (small cylinder shaped batteries commonly used in small electricals)
- C and D batteries (large cylinder shaped batteries commonly used in large electricals)
- Button batteries (small round batteries commonly used for watches or hearing aids)
You can recycle household batteries at your local community recycling centres or supermarkets.
Car and vehicle batteries
Large batteries from cars and other vehicles can be recycled at some of our community recycling centres.

Vapes
You should never put vapes in your black or clear recycling bags as they can damage the environment and cause fires during processing.
Vapes can be recycled at all of our community recycling centres.
Check the community recycling centre locations and opening hours.
Small electrical items
Small electrical items should not be put in your black bags or recycling bags. They contain valuable materials that can be recycled safely.
Electrical items are any items that:
- have a plug
- use batteries
- need charging
- have a picture of a crossed-out wheelie bin on
Community recycling centres
You can take electrical items of any size to your local Community Recycling Centre.
Check what electrical items are accepted at each community recycling centre before you visit.
Leisure centres small electrical bins
Selected leisure centres have bins for small electrical items in reception areas.
Items you can recycle include:
- Personal care appliances - for example hair stylers, toothbrushes and shavers
- Kitchen appliances - for example kettles, toasters and blenders
- Electronic devices - for example phones, radios, CD/DVD players and games consoles
- Lighting - for example lamps, light fittings
- Cables and chargers
We will not accept:
- Vapes
- Large kitchen appliances - for example air fryers and microwaves
Take these items to your local community recycling centre.

Shops and supermarkets
Many retailers that sell electrical items must offer a free take-back service when you buy a replacement item.
Some retailers also accept unwanted electrical items without requiring you to make a purchase.
