Top 10 spots to enjoy al-fresco dining this National Picnic Month

The challenging walk past waterfalls and through forestry is worth it for the view from the top.
If you want a shorter, less strenuous walk, there are picnic benches on the walk up to the summit, and you can dine to the sounds of the waterfall.

This place is perfect for a picnic – day or night! There are 500 acres to explore, as well as lakes and a fantastic children’s playground.
At night, it takes on a new life as it is a Dark Sky Wales Discovery site, offering exceptional stargazing. You can camp out under the stars.

Barry Sidings Country Park, Trehafod
Kids, adults, adrenaline-lovers and dogs alike love Barry Sidings Country Park. There are lovely walks either through the park and around the lakes or up into the surrounding mountains and trails. It’s perfect for mountain biking and you can hire bikes from the onsite Bike Doctor. Plus it’s a short walk to the Welsh Mining Experience, home of the Black Gold Underground Tour.

Clydach Vale Countryside Park, Clydach Vale
The large “bottom” lake is a favourite with families looking for a gentle stroll and a chance to feed the resident ducks and geese. There are benches around the lake from which you can enjoy a picnic. Or follow the path north to the “top” lake where you may even spot a heron and kingfishers.

Top of the Bwlch, Cwmparc
This is an epic view that people of all abilities can enjoy – as it can be reached by car. The car park is on top of the Bwlch Mountain and is home to friendly sheep and an ice cream van that serves the most delicious treats!

Aberdare Park, Aberdare
This beautiful park has been welcoming visitors for 150 years this year and it is not hard to see why. Whether you choose a bench in the adventure playground for picnic and a play, or dine alfresco by the side of the Victorian boating lake or the stunning fountain, there are loads of open spaces to enjoy.

Explore as near or as far as you like in Llanwonno. This huge forestry has plenty of spots for you to stop and dine, or you can keep exploring all the way to the beautiful waterfall.

Penrhys Summit, Penrhys
Enjoy one of the best views of the Rhondda – plus an ancient amphitheatre, resident llama (really) and the epic statue of Our Lady of Penrhys.
There is a small, free car park on site and you can choose your spot and enjoy the views.
