Residential Care Investment Projects

The Council has an ongoing commitment to modernise residential care options for older people in Rhondda Cynon Taf, by investing in new care accommodations with first-class facilities – while responding to reported changes in older people’s needs and expectations. This page outlines all completed, ongoing and planned projects.

Completed Projects

Maesyffynnon Extra Care, Aberaman

This scheme in the Cynon Valley was delivered in partnership with Linc Cymru in 2020, despite the challenges of the pandemic. It has created 40 state-of-the-art extra care apartments within a modern building on the former Maesyffynnon Residential Care Home site, complemented by several community amenities.

Cwrt yr Orsaf, Pontypridd

The new accommodation in Graig opened in 2021, providing 60 extra care beds for older people alongside Linc Cymru. The development also contains modern amenities on the site, for the use of Cwrt yr Orsaf residents and the community. In addition, a Council-run day centre service is delivered from the facility, providing an opportunity for integrated activities for both tenants and day centre service users.

Dan-y-Mynydd Extra Care, Porth

Construction work got underway at the former Dan-y-Mynydd Residential Care Home site in 2024, to bring this prominent unused land back into use. It will create 60 new extra care beds for the community alongside Linc Cymru, as well as modern amenities, and a Council-run day centre. The development is due for completion in early 2026

New care accommodation, Mountain Ash

This scheme at Darran Road is in partnership with Linc Cymru and will deliver a mixture of extra care apartments, dementia care beds, and ‘Later Living’ bungalows within a single site. Full planning permission was granted in 2024, and site clearance works have since been undertaken to prepare for the main construction phase in 2025.

Residential dementia care home, Ferndale

The Council is committed to delivering this 32-bed home dedicated to dementia care, to replace the existing Ferndale House Care Home. It will be built on the old ‘Chubb’ Factory site, with residents and staff moving to the new home. Community engagement activity will inform a planning submission in 2025.
