The Council has begun an important flood alleviation scheme at Granville Terrace in Mountain Ash to carry out repairs and help improve the control of debris in the watercourse – requiring a local road closure at Allen Street.
The £150,000 scheme, which is being wholly funded by Welsh Government, got underway in the week commencing Monday, January 25. It will deliver scour protection to the channel by installing a new concrete slab base and completing repairs to the channel wall. A downstream weir will also be installed in order to help control debris and minimise erosion at this location.
The Council has appointed Horan Construction Ltd as the contractor with responsibility for delivering the scheme, which will last around seven weeks.
The work requires the closure of two short sections of Allen Street, either side of its junction with Granville Terrace and Troed-y-Rhiw Road. Road users will therefore be able to travel from Granville Terrace onto Troed-y-Rhiw Road as usual, but will not be able to turn off or onto Allen Street at this location.
Motorists on the upper section of Allen Street should travel via Aberffrwd Road, Richmond Road and Granville Terrace – or this route in reverse order.
Motorists travelling from the lower section of Allen Street should proceed via Jeffrey Street, Campbell Terrace, Austin Street and Granville Terrace – or from the opposite side, via Troed-Rhiw-Road, Phillip Street and Jeffrey Street.
The contractor has advised that pedestrian access will be maintained at all times, but emergency services must follow the local diversion routes.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “This scheme at Granville Terrace in Mountain Ash is the latest to get underway, as the Council continues to help reduce the risk of flooding in communities across the County Borough. It follows the grille replacement and channel repair works completed nearby at Campbell Terrace in December.
“A number of schemes have also commenced since Christmas, building on the good progress made throughout summer and autumn last year. Two phases of work around the A4059 in Cwmbach started in the first week of January, along with drainage improvements on the section of the A4059 between Penywaun and Trecynon. Longer-term schemes continue to make progress at several locations, including Pentre Road and Park Lane.
“The Council is currently asking residents and businesses that were affected by any recent weather events to complete a survey to help Officers collate local knowledge, storm event data and historical information about flooding. This process ends on January 27, and will inform flood alleviation work going forward – so I’d urge residents to take part before the deadline passes.
“I’d like to thank road users and local residents for their cooperation in relation to the Granville Terrace work, which is now underway. A local road closure and diversion route will remain in place in order to carry out this scheme.”
