MIGHTY New Year Sees Recycling Records Broken!

Bryn Pica Recycling-37
It’s a MIGHTY start to the New Year as Rhondda Cynon Taf Council congratulates its residents on its best EVER recycling figures for the festive period!

Residents across Rhondda Cynon Taf are some of the ‘mightiest’ in Wales and have had a very green Christmas, with more and more residents joining in the fight against waste!

The Council’s MIGHTY Streetcare team have worked throughout the festive period and have been out in all-weather collecting the enormous amount of recycling residents have been putting out, with over 450 tonnes collected in just one day and some residents placing out over 50 bags for collection!

The team have collected almost double the normal amount of dry recycling and food waste over the two week festive period, with an extra 500 tonnes being collected this year - this breaks all previous festive recycling records in Rhondda Cynon Taf!

The mighty refuse and recycling collection crews in Rhondda Cynon Taf have been showing off their super powers throughout the pandemic and there was no let-up over the festive period.  They certainly rose to the challenge by collecting all the additional waste and still getting back on track for normal collections to resume in January!

Over 2770 tonnes of recycling was collected, which includes over 403 tonnes of food waste – that’s 692 FULL refuse vehicles (4tonnes).

The Council is asking all its residents to keep up this MIGHTY work in to the New Year and beyond, to help Rhondda Cynon Taf keep breaking recycling records. Recycling in Rhondda Cynon Taf is so easy it’s one resolution you’re guaranteed to stick to!

Councillor Ann Crimmings, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment, Leisure and Heritage Services, said:

“I would like to thank our mighty crews for all that they do, working over the festive period, braving all weathers and getting up while some people are still sleeping to ensure that our waste is collected. The dedicated team have continued to work throughout the pandemic and have done a great job – their MIGHTY efforts continued right across the festive period.

“I would also like to say a huge well done to all our mighty recycling RCT residents, for continuing to recycle throughout this pandemic, despite these unprecedented challenges, and keeping this up over the Christmas period - their efforts have been fantastic.

“It’s amazing to see our recycling records being broken and it just shows the dedication and commitment that our residents now have to recycling and the environment. If we keep this up, we will hit the Welsh Governments target of 70% well before 2024/25 – well done RCT!

“As a Council we do our best to make recycling easy and accessible for all – with online recycling bag requests and deliveries, and a simple one clear bag system for dry recyclables. All of our Community Recycling Centres are currently open to the public.”

Recycling bags are available at key essential shopping outlets or they can be ordered for delivery online at www.rctcbc.gov.uk/bags. Kerbside collections have continued throughout the pandemic and, where there is a delay, residents are advised to leave their items at their collection point and they will be collected as soon as possible.

Many residents might be having a clear out after Christmas and may find a few items that they need to get rid of, BUT if it’s not recyclable at the kerbside, please take these items to your nearest Community Recycling Centre.

ALL Community Recycling Centres are currently open 7 days a week, from 8am-5.30pm and now allow vans and trailers alongside cars to dispose of items. A number of strict guidelines are in place for site visitors and these are likely to remain in place for the foreseeable future – more details are available at www.rctcbc.gov.uk/CRCsRules. Both re-use shops (‘The-Shed’) based at Treherbert and Llantrisant Recycling Centres are currently closed under the Welsh Government Alert Level 4 Restrictions.

Tissues, wipes - cleaning or personal, face masks, gloves or any other Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) should be placed in your black bag waste – if anyone in your household has symptoms of coronavirus these items should also be double bagged and put out after 72 hours.

Residents are reminded that they can put out an unlimited number of clear recycling bags, but black bag/wheelie bin waste is limited to 2 black bags or 1 wheelie bin (lid must close).
