Proposed Safe Routes in Communities scheme for Llantrisant

The Council is inviting residents to have their say on road safety proposals for Llantrisant, which would help address concerns raised by residents about the volume and speed of traffic travelling through the town.

The proposed Safe Routes in Communities scheme, utilising funding from Welsh Government, would introduce a 20mph speed limit in residential areas of Llantrisant and reduce the speed limit on Llantrisant Common to 30mph. Additional traffic calming measures are also proposed, along with a 7.5 tonne weight limit for vehicles – aside from those requiring access to local premises.

The public notice for the proposals starts on January 18, and those interested in sharing their views must do so by Monday, February 8. All feedback received will help inform the decision-making process for these proposals.

Letters outlining the proposed scheme are in the process of being sent to all residents of Llantrisant, including details about how to have your say. Detailed plans are also available on the Council’s website, at www.rctcbc.gov.uk/traffic.

Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “Officers have brought forward proposals aimed at improving road safety in Llantrisant, in response to community concerns about traffic volumes in the town and the speed at which vehicles travel. The proposals, if agreed, would reduce speed limits at several locations, and prevent large vehicles from attempting to travel on unsuitable roads through a new vehicle weight limit.

“This consultation closely follows a similar process in relation to future Safe Routes in Communities proposals for Cilfynydd, for which residents were asked to have their say by January 15. The proposals for both Cilfynydd and Llantrisant follow several schemes delivered in recent years – including road safety improvements for Cwmwman, Tonypandy, Tonyrefail and Treorchy in 2018/19, and separate schemes in Llwynypia and Abercynon last year.

“The Council has welcomed Welsh Government funding secured to deliver the potential scheme in Llantrisant. Residents can have their say on the proposals up until February 8, and these will be considered by Officers going forward.”
