The Council is reminding residents of the upcoming work in Abercynon which requires the B4275 at Ynysmeurig Bridge to close – with temporary local bus arrangements also coming into effect when the scheme starts on Wednesday.
During June, the Council gave advanced notice of the work, which requires a road closure of the main road and a significant diversion route for motorists and bus users. The indicative start date of Wednesday, July 21, has now been confirmed, and contractor Walters UK Ltd will be on site for six weeks until September 1, scheduled in the school summer holiday to minimise disruption.
The structure supports the B4275 near River Row, and the work will include the replacement of bridge parapets, scour repairs to the central pier and repointing of the abutment and central pier. The scheme also consists of repointing and rebuilding sections of the river wall which support River Row, as well as vegetation clearance located downriver of the bridge.
An alternative route for motorists will be from Station Road, Margaret Street, Edward Street, Ynysmeurig Road, Abercynon Road, Penrhiwceiber Road, Miskin Road, Cross Valley Link Bridge, A4059, Abercynon Roundabout, A472, Fiddler’s Elbow Roundabout, A4054 and B4275 to Ynysmeurig Bridge.
In the opposite direction, the route will be via B4275, A4054, A472, Abercynon Roundabout, A4059, Cross Valley Link Bridge, Miskin Road, Penrhiwceiber Road, Abercynon Road and Ynysmeurig Road to Ynysmeurig Bridge.
Please find a detailed map of the road closure which has been published on the Council’s website, here.
The Council is asking motorists to use these agreed diversion routes where possible. There are other local routes available, but extensive use of these routes will have a negative impact on nearby residential streets.
Access for pedestrians will be maintained, while home to school transport is unaffected due to the school holiday. Emergency service access cannot be maintained. Vehicles wishing to access premises in River Row, and to the rear of Gwendoline Terrace and Glancynon Terrace, will be permitted.
Throughout the road closure, Stagecoach services 60 and 61 (Aberdare to Pontypridd, Mondays to Saturdays) and the NAT Group service 600 (Merthyr Tydfil to Cardiff, Sundays) will be unable to serve their normal routes.
They will operate as normal from Aberdare to Abercynon Clock, and then run around the one-way system back to the A4059. The services will then join the A470 to Pontypridd – with this route also followed in reverse order.
A timetable for the Stagecoach services can be found here.
Due to time constraints, the bus stops at the Imperial Abercynon, Navigation Park, and the Park and Ride at Abercynon Railway Station, will not be served in either direction. Residents who wish to access the service should use the nearest bus stops located at Abercynon Clock and at Station Road.
The Council would like to reiterate its thanks to local residents and road users for their cooperation in advance of the scheme. The essential work will deliver the highest-priority maintenance to the important structure which supports the main road through Abercynon, and will ensure its longer-term use.
