Tributes are being paid to former Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Chief Executive, Steve Merritt, who has sadly passed away following illness.
Rhondda-born Mr Merritt retired from his role in October 2015. At the time, Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Morgan, thanked him for his “sterling service and unfaltering genuine commitment.”
A minute’s silence in memory of Steve Merritt took place during a full meeting of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council, held on Wednesday, February 9.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, said:
“Mr Merritt did an outstanding job as Chief Executive and should be incredibly proud of his career track record in local government and the huge contribution he made to Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council. He was respected by all his colleagues and he nurtured many of the individuals who now play leading officer roles within the Council.
“He was an absolute gentleman and I extend my most sincere condolences to his family and friends at this time, as well as to his former colleagues who worked with him for so many years and have wonderful memories.”
Mr Merritt took up the post of Chief Executive of Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council in March 2014 following the retirement of Keith Griffiths. Prior to that, Mr Merritt was Deputy Chief Executive and the Council’s Group Director of Corporate Services for more than 10 years.
Born in the Rhondda Valley, Mr Merritt began his career in local government at Bronwydd House, Porth, on August 6, 1979, working for Rhondda Borough Council
