The Council has secured significant funding of more than £3.8m across two Welsh Government programmes for 2022/23 – to deliver targeted works that will reduce the risk of flooding in communities.
Each year, Risk Management Authorities in Wales (such as Rhondda Cynon Taf Council) are asked to bid for Welsh Government funding, in order to deliver a programme of flood risk management capital works. The Minister for Climate Change then allocates funding for those successful applications.
The Council has been informed it has received 13 funding awards totalling £2.939m via the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management programme – subject to the appropriate permitting, development permissions and the approval of a business case to proceed. A further 12 awards totalling £939,250 have been secured via the Small Scale Works Grant programmes. This represents funding of £3,878,250 secured for next year.
The Council will also contribute £472,500 to deliver the schemes across the two Welsh Government programmes, bringing the total investment next year to £4,350,750. A full list of each funding award is included below.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “The £3.8m funding by Welsh Government for flood risk management schemes in Rhondda Cynon Taf has been welcomed by the Council. The 25 funding awards across the two programmes will help progress flood alleviation work across the County Borough, benefitting more than 2,000 properties.
“This funding for 2022/23 will complement the Council’s own significant efforts in this area, as we continue to deliver an accelerated capital programme of more than 100 flood alleviation or drainage schemes. At the moment, more than 50 of these have been completed, and by the end of the current financial year our investment since Storm Dennis will stand at more than £13m.
“Reducing the risk of flooding in our communities will continue to be a priority for the Council, in order to protect residents and businesses, and to respond to the increasingly detrimental effects of Climate Change.”
