The Council will begin work to the ordinary watercourse off Campbell Terrace in Mountain Ash – to realign sections of the channel and provide protection to the walls at this location, following damage across several storms.
The scheme will start on Monday, March 14, lasting around four weeks, and the Council has appointed EDS Marine & Civil Engineering Contractors to carry out the works. The section of watercourse lies adjacent to Campbell Terrace, between Austin Street and Allen Street, with water flowing through a series of open channels and culverted sections, then into the River Cynon.
Storm events over a number of years have damaged the walls on both sides of the watercourse – and the upcoming work will realign the channel at this location, and provide concrete protection works to the existing walls. It is being carried out with an 85% contribution from Welsh Government’s Small Scale Works Grant, with the Council providing the remaining 15% of funding.
The majority of this work will take place within the watercourse, and the Council’s contractor is not anticipating to cause much disruption to residents. However, some localised road closures will be required throughout, with traffic management in place to manage pedestrian and vehicle access to garages.
Work hours will be from 8am-5pm on Mondays to Fridays, and the contractor will aim to minimise noise and disruption. The contractor will write to residents before the scheme begins to explain the work and provide site contact details.
Councillor Andrew Morgan, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member with responsibility for Highways and Transportation, said: “These important works to future-proof the ordinary watercourse channel near Campbell Terrace will begin on Monday – to complete the realignment of sections of the channel, and to reconstruct sections of the walls on either side of the watercourse. Localised road closures will be required by the contractor, but the overall disruption to the community is expected to be minimal.
“This area of Mountain Ash was hit particularly hard by Storm Dennis, and the Campbell Terrace scheme is part of a wider strategy to repair and future-proof the local watercourse network. It will run concurrently with ongoing work that is delivering remedial repairs in the watercourse between Allen Street and Copley Street. Work there continues to progress having started in January.
“I’d like to thank the local community for their continued cooperation as the latest repair scheme, supported by Welsh Government, gets delivered.”
