Empowering Young Eco Avengers: Project Outreach Brings Sustainability to Schools

Eco Avengers

In a bold step towards fostering environmental awareness in young minds, The Eco Avengers school workshop has been making a lasting impact across Primary Schools in Rhondda Cynon Taf. Led by the Energy and Carbon Reduction (E&CR) Team, the initiative is designed to educate and inspire students about renewable energy and sustainability through interactive workshops.

The Eco Avengers workshop is part of the wider Project Outreach program, which aims to raise awareness about climate action, energy management, and decarbonisation. This school-focused initiative seeks to instil a sense of responsibility in young students, equipping them with the knowledge and enthusiasm to champion sustainability in their own lives.

With climate change becoming an urgent global issue, the workshop aligns with the Welsh Government’s Net Zero targets and sustainability education goals. By introducing primary school students to concepts like renewable energy and energy sources, carbon footprints, and energy conservation, Project Outreach ensures that future generations are well-informed and empowered to take action.

The Eco Avengers school workshop is built on engaging, hands-on learning experiences. Through dynamic activities, students are encouraged to think critically about how energy is harnessed on earth and develop superheroes and villains.

Key components of the workshop include:

Renewable Energy Education – Students explore solar, wind and hydro energy through creating superpowers for their Eco Avenger

Non-Renewable Energy Education – Students explore coal, gas and oil energy through creating superpowers for their evil villains

Community Engagement – Schools are encouraged to take part in long-term commitments towards saving energy and reducing their carbon footprint.

Local Renewable Energy Projects – Students are shown local renewable energy projects happening in their area, and even in their school!

In its early stages, the workshop was trialled at the Multiply Teachers Conference, where feedback from various schools helped refine the content ad delivery approach. This collaborative process has ensured that the programme remains engaging, informative, and relevant to young learners.

Since its launch, Project Outreach has gained momentum, reaching an increasing number of schools across RCT. Teachers and students alike have praised the workshop for its engaging approach and real-world relevance. The initiative is now being further developed to cater to Welsh-medium schools and Additional Learning Needs (ALN) students, making sustainability education more inclusive.

Additionally, efforts are underway to create a Teacher Training Package, which will allow educators to deliver the Eco Avengers workshop independently. This expansion will significantly increase the workshop’s reach and long-term impact.

Young people can also increase their green knowledge by journeying into the world of recycling, discovering just how and why recycling is so important for the whole County Borough and beyond by visiting the Alan Maddox Recycling and Education Visitor Centre at Bryn Pica, Llwydcoed.

During these special visits, schools can take part in an interactive trip and discover lots of recycling secrets and witness first-hand how waste can be used to create some amazing new items and how it is sorted into waste types, right here in Rhondda Cynon Taf.
