Work to start on major flood alleviation scheme in Aberaman

Work will shortly begin on a major flood alleviation scheme for the Cardiff Road and Maes-y-Ffynnon Lane area of Aberaman, following the Council’s successful funding application to Welsh Government.

The £1.75 million scheme will help reduce flood risk in the local area by increasing drainage network capacity across the Cardiff Road and Maes-y-Ffynnon Lane catchments.

The work will include building a new pond to hold extra rainwater during heavy rainfall. New drainage will also be installed to help the local drainage system cope better during bad weather.

The scheme will help provide improved protection for the local community, including 56 residential properties and three commercial properties.

The appointed contractor, Centregreat, will begin work during the week commencing Monday, July 13, 2026, with the scheme expected to take around 12 months to complete.

Most of the work will take place on Council-owned land that is not open to the public. However, some work will need to take place on Maes-y-Ffynnon Lane.

Temporary traffic lights will be used when this work is taking place. Residents and road users are thanked in advance for their patience.

Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Cabinet Member for Environment and Capital Infrastructure, said:

“This important scheme marks the next stage in our ongoing work to reduce flood risk for communities across Rhondda Cynon Taf.

“The Cardiff Road and Maes-y-Ffynnon Lane area has been identified as a priority location, and this Welsh Government-funded investment will deliver important drainage improvements to help better protect homes, businesses and local infrastructure.

“While most of the work will take place away from areas used by the public, there will be some activity on Maes-y-Ffynnon Lane, including the use of temporary traffic lights when needed. We appreciate this may cause some short-term disruption, and I would like to thank residents and road users for their patience while this important scheme is delivered.”

The Council will continue to provide updates as the scheme progresses.
