Pontypridd Business FINED OVER £3,200

A Pontypridd business has pleaded guilty to the sale and possession of counterfeit clothing.

Following an investigation carried out by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Trading Standards team, it was discovered that Mr Waris Ali of Blizz Clothing Limited, trading as Blizz, 59 Taff Street, Pontypridd, CF37 4TD was selling counterfeit ‘White Fox’ items at their premises.

Following a complaint made by a member of the public to the team, a number of “White Fox” clothing items were seized, whereby the brand representatives later confirmed that there were breaches of the registered trademark.

Blizz Clothing Ltd. were found guilty to charges in relation to breaching the Trade Marks Act 1994.

They received a fine of 1800, a victim surcharge of £720, and was ordered to pay the Council’s costs of £800, totalling £3,320.  The court also ordered for the forfeiture and destruction of the seized counterfeit goods.

Councillor Bob Harris, Cabinet Member for Communities said:

“This should be seen as a major deterrent for people who think they can make money by selling fake goods on our high streets. The old rule applies, if it sounds to good, or is too cheap to be true, then it’s probably a fake!

“The Council’s Trading Standards team work extremely hard to tackle the sale and supply of counterfeit items.

“Counterfeiters are always ready to cash in on the latest craze/brand and will be prioritising profit over safety. As well as infringing the genuine products trademark, they are not carrying out the required testing to ensure the product is safe”.

“Generally these products are of poor quality and have been shown to be dangerous. I am asking residents that they only buy goods from reputable or accredited sellers. By purchasing counterfeit goods, consumers are supporting illegal and criminal traders and undermining legitimate businesses.

“Enforcement is always a last resort, that is only undertaken when the team believe a law has been broken that would cause harm to the public – but the message is clear if you are found selling FAKE or UNSAFE items, we will take action!”
