The first element of work within a major resurfacing scheme at the A4233 in Maerdy will take place over the school Easter holiday – to renew a section of footway at Glanville Terrace. The scheme will be completed in the summer, including a footway renewal at Richard Street and full road resurfacing.
The Council has appointed Calibre Contracting Ltd to deliver the first works, using the two-week school holiday from Monday, April 14. Work over Easter will renew a section of footway at Glanville Terrace. The pavement will be brought out of use, and pedestrians should use the opposite footway as an alternative route. No traffic management is required for this element of work.
The second element of the overall scheme will take advantage of the school summer holiday later this year, to minimise disruption to the community. This will include renewing the remaining section of footway at Glanville Terrace, along with a section of footway at the adjacent Richard Street. Finally, it will be followed by full resurfacing of the carriageway, completing the scheme.
An allocation of £225,000 has been earmarked for this major resurfacing scheme within the 2025/26 Highways and Transportation Capital Programme.
Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “Our major highway maintenance effort continues in 2025/26, as our newly-agreed capital programme allocates £6.94 million for 78 resurfacing schemes, £556,000 for seven footway renewals and access improvements, and £200,000 for four unadopted roads schemes. Our accelerated funding approach over many years has been reflected in a general trend of improvement to the overall condition of our roads – although we understand there is still lots more to do.
“The upcoming work at the A4233 in Maerdy will see the first stage of footway renewals completed at Glanville Terrace, using the school Easter holiday to minimise disruption. We’ll then take advantage of the summer holiday later this year to complete footway resurfacing, including at Richard Street – while the overall scheme will be completed by full resurfacing to the carriageway.
“Thanks in advance to the community in Maerdy for your cooperation. The works over Easter will require a footway to be brought out of use, with no traffic management needed. Officers will then communicate details of the summer work programme to residents once finalised nearer the time.”
