Local scheme completed to reduce flood risk in Blaenrhondda

Work has now been completed to improve and enhance the culvert near Brook Street in Blaenrhondda, to reduce the risk of local flooding.

The Welsh Government funded work started in December 2024 and has been completed on time, before the end of March 2025.

The scheme has improved the watercourse to the rear lane of Brook Street, having widened the channel, increased the depth of the culvert inlet, and enhanced the inlet.

The images illustrate the improvements that have been made, with before (right) and after (left) photos showing the extent of the works.

By increasing the structure’s capacity, the scheme is designed to reduce instances of overtopping during heavy rainfall – as seen most recently in Storm Bert.

It also aims to reduce the risk of debris blockages and therefore improving the flow of water.

The design of this scheme in 2023/24, and the subsequent construction phase in 2024/25, have both been funded by the Flood Risk Management Small Scale Works Programme.

Through this programme, Welsh Government has contributed 85% of the scheme’s costs, match-funded by the Council – representing a total investment value of £200,000.

The Council’s contractor Hammond ESC Ltd has now vacated the site upon completion of the work.
