On 8 May 2025, we mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Rhondda Cynon Taf will join the nation in uniting to celebrate 80 years since the end of World War II in Europe. VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for freedom but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since. It is a day to honour the past and celebrate a future built on unity, hope, and peace.
Here in Rhondda Cynon Taf, plans are underway to join in this shared moment of celebration with several events taking place on the anniversary of VE Day itself, Thursday 8th May, and also on Saturday 10th May.
The celebrations will start at 10am on 8th May as the VE Day 80 flag is raised and the VE Day 80 proclamation is read. This will take place outside the Council’s offices in Llys Cadwyn, Taff Street, Pontypridd. Members of the public are also welcome to join us at this special event.
At 9:30pm on 8th May, beacons and Lamp Lights of Peace will shine across the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, and UK Overseas Territories—symbolising the enduring strength of communities across the UK and the Commonwealth.
The Rhondda Cynon Taf beacon will be lit at 9:30pm in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd. The official VE Day 80 organisers are encouraging everyone to take part and stand together in gratitude, honouring the sacrifices that secured our freedom. The beacons are a symbol of our commitment to peace, ensuring future generations understand and cherish its value.
The shared moments of celebration continue on Saturday 10th May, 11am – 4pm, with a VE Day 80 event in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park, Pontypridd. At 11am, there will be a service at the War Memorial. All are welcome to come along, bring a picnic and enjoy the post service entertainment which will include live music, refreshment stalls, and a beer garden. There will also be activity stalls for children and information on services available to members and veterans of the Armed Forces.
In addition to this, a mobile climbing wall will be installed for the event and a cave experience where children and adults will be able to explore a tunnel system that spans across two levels which includes stalactites and stalagmites and much more.
Councillor Maureen Webber, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Council Business and Corporate estates said:
VE Day – or Victory in Europe Day – marks the day when war finally came to an end in Europe. It was a hugely significant turning point towards overall victory in World War II. It is so important that we commemorate this day, not only to remember the hardships faced and the sacrifices made by people in the United Kingdom and all over the world in the largest and deadliest conflict in human history, but also to ensure current and future generations do not forget what was sacrificed.
I am so pleased we are able to join in with the rest of the UK to offer these commemorative events and would encourage residents to come along to the VE Day 80 event in Ynysangharad War Memorial Park on Saturday 10th May to enjoy the entertainment and also to remember those who fought for the freedom we enjoy today.
Rhondda Cynon Taf Council offers a whole range of information and benefits to veterans and serving Armed Forces members ranging from free access to leisure centres to wellbeing and health support. More information on this can be found here.
I look forward to participating in the events planned in Rhondda Cynon Taf to commemorate VE Day 80, and to welcoming residents along.
