Safely managing trees along the main commuter routes in the County Borough

Tree felling

The Council has provided an update on the ongoing work to remove and cut back trees along our busiest main roads, which is essential to ensure safety for road users.

The first phase of work, along the A4059 in the Cynon Valley, was completed by the end of last week (Friday, December 12).

The work is necessary to remove any potential obstructions to road signs and street lights, and to ensure the trees don’t encroach onto the highway.

Essential tree removal like this is mitigated by the Council planting more than 660 trees across the County Borough every year.

In October 2025, work activity began on the A4059 at Penywaun and has progressed through the Cynon Valley – heading southwards all the way to Mountain Ash (at a point near the petrol station).

The final stretch of road from Newtown to the A470 slip road at Abercynon has been the focus of the works in recent works.

In the New Year, the programme will move onto the Rhondda area, covering the A4119 from Coed Ely all the way through to Clydach Vale, and the A4233 Trebanog bypass.

This will be followed by works in the Taff area – at B4595 Llantwit Road (USW Treforest to Tonteg), the Church Village Bypass (Cross Inn to Matalan), and Llantrisant Road in Beddau.

It is anticipated that the full programme will be completed by spring 2026.

Some traffic management will be needed for these continuing works, to ensure safety for workers and road users. All work activity will be scheduled outside of peak hours.

Thanks to all road users for your patience and cooperation.
