Rhondda Cynon Taf Council Invites You to A Candlelit Vigil for White Ribbon Day

White Ribbon Day 2025 THUMBNAIL

Rhondda Cynon Taf Council is proud to host a public candlelit vigil on Tuesday, November 25, to mark White Ribbon Day – the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. This year’s theme, We Speak Up, calls on men and boys to be active allies in ending violence against women and girls by challenging harmful attitudes, behaviours, and everyday sexism.

Join us at Pontypridd Library – Llys Cadwyn, Pontypridd (CF37 4TH) from 5pm-7pm on Tuesday, November 25. The event is FREE and open to all.

The evening will feature performances, poetry, and a candlelight vigil to honour victims and survivors of gender-based violence. We’ll be joined by speakers and performers from across the community, including:

  • Taf Ely Ladies Choir
  • Alex Davies-Jones MP
  • Emma Wools, Police and Crime Commissioner
  • YEPS
  • Community Safety Team
  • Councillor Maureen Webber BEM, Deputy Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and White Ribbon Champion
  • Candlelit Vigil led by Councillor Bob Harris, Cabinet Member for Communities.

Councillor Bob Harris, Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “White Ribbon Day is a powerful reminder that ending violence against women and girls is everyone’s responsibility.

“I encourage everyone to join us for our candlelit vigil event on November 25, and to make the White Ribbon Promise to never use, excuse, or remain silent about men’s violence against women.”

Why White Ribbon Day Matters:

  • 1 in 4 women will experience sexual assault or attempted assault in their lifetime (NAO, 2025)
  • 3 in 5 women have faced sexual harassment or bullying at work (TUC, 2023)
  • 77% of girls aged 7–21 have experienced online harm in the past year (Girlguiding, 2024)
  • 20% of all police-recorded crime in 2022-23 was related to violence against women and girls (NAO, 2025)

Councillor Maureen Webber BEM, Deputy Leader and White Ribbon Champion, said: “This White Ribbon Day is about action as well as awareness. It is important that we recognise the importance of speaking up.

“We must challenge everyday behaviours that contribute to a culture of inequality and abuse. By standing together, we send a clear message: violence against women and girls has no place in our society.

“Join us on November 25 and help us to create a world where everyone is safe, equal, and respected.”
