Construction work on a new specialist care accommodation in Gelli, for people with learning disabilities in adulthood and older age, is continuing to make progress on site. The scheme will be delivered next year, and is a part of the Council’s continued commitment to modernise care options for older people.
Work started at the former Bronllwyn Residential Care Home site at Colwyn Road at the end of last year, by the Council’s appointed contractor Langstone Construction Group. The first-class facility will include 14 en-suite rooms with respite provision, built across a lower ground floor, ground floor, and first floor.
Modern amenities within the development include three day rooms and three sensory rooms, plus a commercial kitchen, hairdresser, assisted bathrooms and a training room. A courtyard area will also be located near the building, while the site’s existing car park and main access point is being retained.

Following important progress made over the summer months, a progress update has now been shared. As shown in the latest images from the work site, construction continues to progress across the walls, floors and external elements, along with the site’s drainage and attenuation systems. The front walls and roof trusses have also been put in place to the lower ground floor. Work to install the internal and foul drainage is also currently in progress.
In addition, work has progressed to constructing the foundations of the tower crane, needed for the next stage of construction. The overall development is currently on course for completion in summer 2026.
Councillor Gareth Caple, Rhondda Cynon Taf Council’s Cabinet Member for Social Care, with responsibility for Adult Services, said: “This latest progress report from the specialist care accommodation development in Gelli shows the lower floor elements of the building really taking shape, along with the installation of key components like the site’s drainage systems. The site images show how we are transforming this unused former residential care home site, and bringing it back into use right at the heart of the community.
“The Council has made a commitment to modernise residential care options for older people, and this scheme in Gelli is being built at the same time as the new 60-bed Porth extra care scheme. We’ve already delivered extra care in Aberaman and Graig, while a future project that mixes extra care, dementia care and ‘Later Living’ in Mountain Ash has received planning permission.
“The Gelli scheme will specialise in caring for people with learning disabilities in adulthood and older age, as we cater for current and future needs. The Council has also committed to providing a purpose-built dementia care facility in Ferndale, and an accommodation for people with learning disabilities in adulthood in Church Village – with both of these projects in development.
“I’d like to thank our contractor Langstone Construction Group for their commitment to progressing the Gelli development. I’m looking forward to seeing further construction progress in the weeks and months ahead, as the project moves towards its scheduled completion date next summer.”
The construction phase is progressing with minimal disruption to the local community.
