Proposed Flood Alleviation Scheme for Maes y Ffynnon Lane in Aberaman

The Council has gained an Approval In Principal from the Welsh Government and has now submitted the business case for review by the Flood and Coastal Erosion Risk Management Programme to deliver a major Flood Alleviation Scheme in the Maes‑y‑Ffynnon Lane area of Aberaman.

Subject to funding approval and the subsequent appointment of a contractor, the scheme would reduce flood risk for 56 residential properties and 3 commercial properties, providing significantly improved protection for the local community through a series of targeted interventions. These include:

  • Upgrading existing ordinary watercourse inlet structures
  • Diverting two ordinary watercourses to improve flow capacity
  • Constructing a new 5,450m³ attenuation basin – capable of storing the equivalent of 109,000 bathtubs of water or two Olympic‑sized swimming pools during storm events
  • Installing remote telemetry equipment to support real‑time monitoring in the Council’s emergency control room
  • Associated access improvements to support ongoing maintenance

The proposed scheme will also rationalise several watercourses in the area, reducing the need for significant future engineering works along Cardiff Road.

A dedicated webpage for the scheme is currently being updated and will provide further detail as the project progresses toward delivery.

Councillor Andrew Morgan OBE, Leader of Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Investment, said: “The Council continues to actively pursue external funding sources to deliver projects as part of a substantial programme of flood alleviation work across the County, focusing on communities most at risk.

“Since 2020, more than 150 schemes have been delivered, and while this represents significant progress, the increasing frequency of severe weather events shows that continued investment is essential.

“Indications are that this investment is making a real difference – in Storm Bert, an estimated 2,200 properties were protected through the targeted investment we have delivered.

“Our latest bid to Welsh Government for 2026/27 forms part of a wider package of more than £4 million in external funding that will allow 24 priority schemes to move forward over the coming year. When combined with Council match‑funding and allocations already in place, the overall investment will be considerably higher — building on the £6 million secured for the current financial year.

“The Maes‑y‑Ffynnon Lane scheme is an important part of this ongoing work, and the Council will issue a further update once funding is confirmed.”
