New energy-efficient homes set to welcome tenants at former Button Factory site in Porth

Tenants are set to move into ten new high-quality, energy-efficient homes at Clos y Ffatri in Porth, as Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council continues to deliver on its commitment to increasing affordable housing. The site will welcome its first tenants this May.

The development, delivered in partnership with Trivallis, Welsh Government and Bluefield Land Ltd, has transformed the former “Button Factory” site on Catherine Crescent into a modern, sustainable residential community.

The site has a rich industrial heritage, once producing board game pieces, dice, and wooden crates for Corona bottles, now begins a new chapter, providing homes for people on the Council’s housing waiting list HomefinderRCT!

Clos y Ffatri will deliver ten new homes, including four one-bedroom flats and six two-bedroom houses. Built adjacent to previously developed homes, the site expands an established neighbourhood in a well-connected area of Porth.

All properties have been built to achieve an EPC A rating, supporting the Council’s ambitions to create more sustainable communities while helping residents reduce their energy costs. Facilities such as air source heat pumps have been included in the homes to improve efficiency and sustainability, with guidance and support provided to tenants on how to use these to their advantage.

Sustainability has been a key consideration throughout the development, with garden systems designed to manage surface water and reduce flood risk.

The project has delivered wider community benefits through the Porth Decides initiative. Funding generated by the development has supported local groups Gelli Life For Living and Shift Together, with almost £6,000 awarded to help deliver activities that support mental health and wellbeing.

Councillor Mark Norris, Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing at Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, said: “I am delighted to see this development come forward, providing 10 new energy‑efficient affordable homes to meet local housing need. Our partnership with Trivallis has enabled us to increase housing supply and create a sustainable, well‑connected community where residents can thrive. This project demonstrates the Council’s ongoing commitment to delivering affordable homes for people across our area.”

Sarah Davies, Development Manager at Trivallis, added: “Clos y Ffatri is a really important development for us, not only because it brings new, high-quality homes to the area, but because it helps us respond directly to local housing need.

Seeing this site transformed into new homes has been incredibly rewarding and reflects the close collaboration with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, Welsh Government and the hard work of Bluefield Land Ltd in bringing the scheme to life.”

Homes at Clos y Ffatri will be allocated based on local housing need, they are allocated to residents whose housing needs suit the type of home available.
